LIZZY ABRAHAMS BY CARISSA MARNCE

Lizzy Abraham Short Story

GENRE: SHORT STORY TITLE: LIZZY ABRAHAMS WRITER: CARISSA MARNCE, SOUTH AFRICA REVIEWER: HALIEO MOTANYANE, LESOTHO

There’s a saying, ‘Power resides where men believe it resides’. Sometimes we let circumstances rule us simply because we feel we do not have the power to outrule such circumstances. It is until we are pushed to the corner that we find our power. Lizzy Abrahams is one fierce lady who never knew she had it in herself until she was pushed to the corner.

In her story, Carissa Marnce teaches her readers about the power that one possesses from within. The plot takes us through a life of an ordinary woman who, like many other Christians would do anything rather than be seen in a tavern. But then she lives with a man who is a friend to a bottle. How then would he get home if she wouldn’t have to go and get him? Now one would wonder what commandment does one break by entering a Shebeen’s house.

The story is based in South Africa, a land known by many as free land. And so it is understandable to relate with Carissa about the curses that Lizzy receives from her church mates when they find him in the Shebeen. However, it is quite debatable to view just how freedom of speech can ruin one depending on the little information people receive before they voice their opinions.  For one who reads this story, we learn a lot about ourselves. And so it is very important to know that we have the power within ourselves, and it is there to be used anytime, not when we feel threatened only.

"Beware of the Mountains for they call you home."
