Environmental issues: Vocabulary
Barren land - An area of ground where plant growth is poor and sparse, with little biodiversity.
biodiversity - The range of animals and plants in a given area.
deforestation - The cutting down of trees and forests to allow a different land use.
Combined heat power system - A system which recovers heat lost through the production of energy and uses it to produce hot water. This can be used by homes or public buildings.
greenhouse gas - The gases responsible for global warming - carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons).
Ozone depletion - the process of reduction of ozone resulted in the ozone hole.
Ozone hole - an arean in the ozone layer where the amount of ozone has been very much reduced so that harmful radiation from the sun could pass through it.
LEDC - Less economically developed country (LEDC) has low levels of development, based on economic indicators, such as gross domestic product (the country's income).
MEDC - More economically developed country (MEDC). This type of country is wealthier or has higher standards of health and education than many other countries.
Pollution - Contaminating the air, water or ground with harmful substances.
Recycling - Reusing materials or reprocessing waste materials to produce new materials.
Reusing - To use an item again and again.
Sustainable - An activity which does not consume or destroy resources or the environment.
Pollutant - a substance that pollutes air or water
Log - cut down trees in a forest for wood.
Fossil fuel - Natural, finite fuel formed from the remains of living organisms, eg oil, coal and natural gas.
Global warming - The rise in the average temperature of the Earth's surface.
Greenhouse effect - The retention of heat in the atmosphere caused by the build-up of greenhouse gases.
Solar radiation - Energy from the sun - consisting of visible light, heat or infra-red radiation, ultra-violet and other forms of radiation.
Implement - to put into effect.
Replenish - To replace or fill something back up again.
Resource - anything that is useful to people
Carbon footprint - A measure of how much carbon is used through the activities of a person, company or country.
Disposable - Something which is designed to be thrown away after use
environmental impact - Loking at the effects that something has on its surroundings.
Sweatshop - A place - workshop or factory - where people are forced to work long hours or in harsh conditions.
Sewage - used water and waste substances produced by human bodies
Noise pollution - excessive noise produced by factories, traffic, construction etc.
Deplete - to reduce sth by a large amout so that there is not enough left.
