The Future of EV Charging

Even though electric vehicle charging is new, the technology has rapidly developed in the recent past. What was previously a technology that allowed an electric vehicle to charge fully in 8 hours has now progressed to allowing full charge within 30 minutes. Demand for charging stations has also increased with the growth in the sales of electric vehicles. Either way, electric vehicle charging can be done through cable or wireless.

The New Trend of Energy Storage as Virtual Transmission Explained

The latest trend is that power transmission companies around the world are increasingly looking at energy storage technology to defer or replace transmission system upgrades. How this works is energy storage is placed along a transmission line and operated to inject or absorb the power, mimicking transmission line flows. Going with names like “virtual transmission” in Australia and “GridBooster” in Germany, projects totaling over 3 GW of capacity are poised to increase system efficiency and reliability across the world.

Growing Adoption of Energy Storage “as-a-service” (ESaaS)

Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) is emerging as an innovative approach for obtaining reliable power supply, predictability of pricing, and meeting sustainability goals.

Exelon is exploring nuclear power plant hydrogen production

Exelon Corporation, an American nuclear electric power generation company headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, is spearheading a unique project to demonstrate integrated hydrogen production, storage, and utilization facility at an already existing nuclear plant facility. This opportunity if realized presents a lucrative revenue stream for existing nuclear plants many of which are struggling to operate competitively. India’s Economic Survey Pitches for USD 330 billion in investment in Renewables by 2030

The latest Economic Survey of India 2018–19 indicates that additional investment in renewable plants for up to the year 2022 (without transmission lines) would be about USD 80 billion at today’s prices and USD 250 billion would be required for the period 2023–2030. Thus, on an annualized basis, investment opportunity for over USD 30 billion per year is expected to come up for the next decade and beyond. India comes at fourth and fifth respectively in installed wind and solar capacity as per the survey.

China Solar PV installed Capacity reaches 174 GW

On January 18, the National Energy Administration of China released national power industry statistics. The country’s newly installed capacity of Solar PV in 2018 hit the figure 44.26 GW, down from 2017 (new installed capacity in 2017–52.88 GW).

US Wind Power on the Rise

Wind power in the US has expanded rapidly as the total installed capacity in the country tripled in the last decade alone. Falling prices and technology innovation, along with government support, enabled the breakneck expansion. The average price of wind power is now at 2 cents per kWh -a significant fall from 9 cents in 2009.
