In 1960, Alexey German graduated from the directing department (workshop of Grigory Kozintsev) of the Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinema. In 1967 he shot his first full-length feature film - "The Seventh Companion".
During his creative career as a filmmaker, Alexei German managed to shoot only 6 full-length feature films, and the last film - "Hard to Be a God" - had to be completed by his son, Alexei German, Jr.
