Catherine Deneuve's Birthday

On October 22, 1943 in Paris, in the family of French stage actors Maurice Dorléac and Renée Simonot a second daughter was born, who was named Catherine Fabienne. Well, her last name, of course, was Dorléac. The first daughter, who was born a year and a half earlier, was called Françoise.

Les parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg). 1964. Director Jacques Demy. Movie's Rating - 8,260. 436th Rank in the Golden Thousand.

Since Catherine's parents were actors, and the elder sister of Francoise followed in their footsteps, having already been playing on the theater stage since 10 years old, Catherine had no choice but to join the acting profession. In 1957, at the age of 14, she starred in an episodic role in the film "Les collégiennes (The Twilight Girls)" by André Hunebelle. Neither the role in this film, nor the film itself deserves any attention. But we mention it only because on this film Catherine decided to change her last name. It seemed to her that there were too many Dorléacs in the acting environment: both dad - Dorléac, and older sister - Dorléac, and besides, the younger sister also starred in this film under the name Sylvie Dorléac. Yes, and half-sister Daniel, although she was not born from Maurice, but also took the name Dorléac. In short, Catherine changed her name to the name of her maternal grandmother - Deneuve. And under the name Catherine Deneuve became famous throughout the world.

Repulsion. 1965. Director Roman Polanski. Movie's Rating - 8,288. 414th Rank in the Golden Thousand.

The name Catherine Deneuve, I, like many of my other peers, has been known since childhood. In 1966, the movie-opera "Les parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg)" was released on the screens of Soviet cinemas, and my parents, of course, watched it. They didn’t take me to the cinema. But I didn’t really want to: I was not even 10 years old, and films about love, and even more so, opera films didn’t interest me at all then. But from the enthusiastic parental discussions, I remembered the name Catherine Deneuve.

Belle de jour (Beauty of the Day). 1967. Director Luis Buñuel.

And the first time I saw Catherine Deneuve on the screen in 1979 in the movie “Écoute voir... (See Here My Love)” as part of an out-of-competition screening at the Moscow Film Festival. And, frankly, I was somewhat disappointed. Most likely, due to the dissimilarity of the appearance - an airy, almost transparent creature like the “Turgenev girl”, and the role of the supposedly brutal detective.

Tristana. 1970. Director Luis Buñuel.

With “Belle de jour (Beauty of the Day)” and other magnificent roles of magnificent Deneuve I got to know much later - after the start of perestroika.

Le dernier métro (The Last Metro). 1980. Director François Truffaut.

Up to her 78 years, Catherine Deneuve has played in 122 feature films. The most common epithets most often awarded to her by film critics are “icy”, “aloof”, “mysterious” but invariably a beauty.

Indochine. 1992. Director Régis Wargnier.

3 feature films with Catherine Deneuve entered the FilmGourmand's Golden Thousand. Thanks to this indicator and a very special, incomparable beauty, Catherine Deneuve is included in the list of 100 most beautiful and sexy Actresses of world cinema, compiled by FilmGourmand.

Dancer in the Dark. 2000. Director Lars von Trier. Movie's Rating - 9,571. 76th Rank in the Golden Thousand.

On the birthday of the great Actress, as usual, I want to remind her fans of shots from the best films with her participation.
