Mental Health Drugs: What Everyone Affected by Pill Shaming Should Know

Mental health is certainly one of the growing concerns, but it is not recognized as one of the major health issues. When something is wrong with a person mentally, they become a joke for their peers. The society has never given any importance to these problems. Mental issues represent a sign of weakness in a person. They are not treated equivalent to heart disease, diabetes or other problems when they are equally critical. When a person musters enough courage to get diagnosed and accept the treatment, the masses manage to pull them down with actions like Pill Shaming.

Pill shaming comes in different kinds of forms. When a person is taking medication: Asking what is the need to take medicine, Saying anything like it is a sign of weakness, or refusing to associate with the person are all forms of Pill Shaming. Calling the person names or making a joke is also considered pill shaming. It forces the individual to drop their treatment, or stop taking their medication, which may worsen their conditions. This article will cover the importance of mental health and what everyone affected by pill shaming should know.

Mental illness is an ‘illness’

We call it mental illness because it is a form of illness. When you see a person suffering from cold and fever, you immediately suggest them to take medicines. Mental illness is the same, it means that their brain is not functioning properly. It is identical to catching an infection or suffering through a terrible disease. Just like our body or other organs require medication and proper treatment to function properly, the brain also requires the treatment during an illness.

Mental illness affects our emotions, thought process, thinking capabilities, or behavior. It can hinder a person’s daily life and day to day activities. The problem strikes a major threat to a person’s self-esteem. It can strike anyone, regardless of their age, gender, or other factors. Depression is one of the examples of mental problems. Mental illness is treatable, just like any other illness. Medication provided for mental illness helps the person with their daily life and ease their problems.

The brain is an organ

Anyone going through mental problems should understand that it is an indication that their organ is not working properly. Mental health is not intangible; it is very physical and chemical. When our other organs like the kidney or liver do not function properly, we appoint a check-up. The doctors diagnose our organs and prescribe us medicines, which we accept and incorporate into our lives. Initially, medicines fix our problems. But when it comes to the brain, we procrastinate or completely ignore the problems. The problem is almost non-existent to us, and we are forced to believe that mental problems are just issues with our personalities or thought-process. The truth is that we may find a replacement for some other organs in our body, but not for the brain because it makes us who we are. Replacing the brain is not possible; it is like replacing an entire person.

The brain is an organ that forms our entire personality. It has various kinds of chemicals running through it, which work with our entire body. Our brain is responsible for how we perceive and react to the world by releasing these chemicals. Other organs are just there to aid the brain. When something is wrong with the brain, it will start acting up and may change our personality (Personality disorders), or change what we perceive (Schizophrenia). These problems indicate that there is a chemical imbalance in the brain, which is similar to liver catching an infection, or kidney stones forming up. For the cure, expert guidance and medication are a necessity.

Mental drugs are important for mental health

When you suffer through a physical disorder or injury, you do not just deal with it. You visit the doctor and get the treatment required, which also includes medicines and drugs for use. People even take pain killers for excessive pain, headaches, and other problems. Then why should mental drugs be considered anything different? They help in easing the mental distress, they improve the lifestyle of a person, and they will help in curing a mental problem. It is what everyone affected by pill shaming should know.

People are in a delusion that mental drugs are wrong. Some even consider them as an excuse to get ‘high’ or ‘feel-good’, but the truth is that they are very important. They trigger the chemical responses or processes in the brain which a person’s brain is not capable of initiating on its own or having problems doing do. It rectifies the problem and relieves the person from feelings that are equivalent to excruciating physical pain. Although there are side-effects of taking mental drugs, one should recognize them just like side-effects one can have from any other medication. Every drug in this world for any disease or illness has side-effects. We need to understand that the pros outweigh the cons.

Pros outweigh the cons for mental health

Mental drugs can cause side-effects like insomnia, headaches, nausea, lethargy, weight gain or hormonal initiation, which could influence sexual life. But the same is true for any medicine in the world. They all come with some form of side-effects, some even worse than the mentioned. We need to understand that the benefits one would have from medication are a good bargain for the problems it may cause. The person also builds tolerance overtime for the side-effects. It is the same response a person would have if they take a stronger medicine for some other disease; there are bound to be reactions. But the body eventually gets used to the medicine and grows a tolerance for the side-effects while the medicine remains effective.

The drugs help the person to have an improved social life with people and find daily life easier to go through. They are successful in dealing with the situations which impaired them previously. In major cases, medication can also save lives of people because we are all very well aware of the facts that depressions have caused a drastic amount of life lost over time and that is just one of the mental illness. There are several other dangerous illnesses, like multiple personality disorders, OCD and PTSD. These illnesses are not just harmful to the person suffering from them but also the people they are close to and the mental drugs help in preventing such issues from reaching dangerous levels.
