Shelter for stray animals “Hayot” is restoring after a fire.

Three enclosures and a gatehouse were damaged in a fire at the “Hayot” animal shelter in the Tashkent region.

The flame flared up yesterday, July 14, at 4:30 pm in a nearby dry grass field. According to the founder of the shelter, Iroda Matkarimova, at that time the workers were building a disinfection barrier on the street. About ten minutes after they returned to the shelter, a field caught fire. It quickly spread to buildings. The roofs of the gatehouse and three enclosures burst into flames. The shelter workers released the dogs inside. Animals and people were not injured by fire. The dogs left without lodging were temporarily housed in other enclosures.

- During two years of the shelter's existence, there were no fires on its territory. The shelter workers do not smoke, the kitchen is on the opposite side. Dry grass could be set on fire by shepherds. Possible versions will be worked out by the investigation, - said Iroda Matkarimova.

Today, the shelter is home to 1,500 stray dogs, including puppies. Construction is underway on the territory. Its course and the very existence of the shelter, feeding, and caring for animals are carried out by volunteers at their own expense and donations from caring people.

During the period of quarantine restrictions in April, a mini-shelter for animals was organized on the territory of "Hayot", whose owners fell ill and were sent to quarantine zones. The dogs were brought by trapping services from Chirchik and Kibray, with which the shelter works on a contractual basis.

At a recent briefing, the chief sanitary doctor Nurmat Otabekov said that quarantined residents of Tashkent could donate their pets to the “Hayot” shelter for two weeks. Iroda Matkarimova confirmed that on the day of the briefing she spoke on the phone with a woman who called her from the chief doctor.

- She asked me: “When there was the last quarantine, you accepted animals from Chirchik and Kibray from which the owners were quarantined. How can Tashkent residents who find themselves in the same situation be? ”. I said that on our own, we organized a temporary quarantine zone and then returned the animals to their owners. I explained that we will continue to accept dogs from the Kibray and Chirchik trapping services because we have agreed with them. Now in these services, there are no enclosures for overexposing animals. If we refuse to take them, the dogs will be killed. The shelter does not have such an agreement with the Tashkent service, - said Iroda Matkarimova.

She noted that "Hayot" can make an exception for lonely elderly people who have no one to entrust their pets. The possibility of the shelter and the new circumstances caused by the fire do not allow everyone to be accepted. Now the team is busy restoring the enclosures and needs help to get back to work as soon as possible.
