Abbottabad was established and named after Significant James Abbott in January 1853 as the base camp of Hazara Region during the English Raj after the extension of Punjab. He remained the principal Appointee Chief of the Hazara locale from 1849 until April 1853. Major Abbott is noted for having composed a sonnet named "Abbottabad", before his re-visitation of England, in which he composed of his affection for the town and his misery at leaving it.
