The Wall Street Journal described three New York galleries as "longtime rivals" for selling the collection of late philanthropist Donald Marron. Pace, Gagosian, and Acquavella planed to privately sell over 300 works totalling the US $450 million. Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Ed Ruscha, etc. are among the artists included. How exactly the trio managed to pull it off, particularly with competition from Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and Phillips, may never be public knowledge. “The joy of private sales,” quipped Pace president Marc Glimcher.

For Latvian-American artist Vija Celmins, the objective of workmanship was never self-articulation yet rather the surfaces and actual characteristics that can draw the watcher's eye. "I attempt to utilize a picture since it pulls in you to the composition… however the work of art isn't a window. The work of art has its own world," Celmins told the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2018. "At times… the lone part that I think is about any worth is simply the making."
