Proton X50 and Perodua D55L-should we compare these two SUVs?

Does the upcoming domestic car D55L belong to the A or B segment SUV? Is it in the same market segment as Proton X50? The short answer is: yes. Proton X50 and Perodua D55L can be said to be SUVs in the B segment, but many people also say that Proton X50 malaysia actually belongs to the A segment.

What does the A, B, C, D segment car mean?

The European ABCD vehicle classification is usually used as a standard to measure the size or capacity of passenger cars. However, as far as the law is concerned, this ABCD sub-category does not even exist. When talking about car types, it is used to facilitate buyers and the public.

Most countries (including Malaysia) that use the Euro-type vehicle approval process to register new cars only set passenger car laws for the following three categories: M1 (the following 8 seats), M2 (more than 8 seats, and weighing less than 5 tons) And M3 (8 seats or more, weighing more than 5 tons). The United Nations Forum on World Vehicle Harmonization Regulations (WP.29) only recognizes three parts of the passenger car.

So, is the ABCD segment of this category invalid?

In terms of legislation and enforcement, no. However, this does not mean that it cannot be used directly. Sometimes, we need to simplify the public’s understanding, rather than just making people dizzy with straight facts.

The European Commission has created car sub-categories in the ABCD format as a simple guide for the general public. They did not set specific standards for each market segment. Therefore, we cannot say that A-class cars are limited to 4 meters.

After all, between the total length of the car and the distance between the wheels, the distance between the wheels is a more important criterion because it will directly affect the power of the vehicle and the compartment space. The total length of the car is not that important.

The confusion about the 4-meter limit for Indian A-class cars comes from the car reference in the Indian market. Here, cars with a length of less than 4 meters must pay lower taxes. All cars or hatchbacks in India are classified in the A segment, ranging from A1 to A6. Segment B is used for "multi-purpose" vehicles.

Perodua D55L is the twin of Daihatsu Rocky / Toyota Raize in the Japanese market. The two models are stuck between two rather confusing parts. It is only slightly larger than tax-deductible "kei minicars" such as Daihatsu Taft, but smaller than ordinary B-segment SUVs such as the Mazda CX-3 or the latest Toyota Yaris Cross (not related to the Yaris in the Thai market) ).

Raize / Rocky has no direct competitors. In Japan, the closest competitors are the low-end Suzuki Xbee and Honda Vezel, which we call Honda HR-V.

So, can Perodua D55L compete with Proton X50? Yes, not at all.

Proton X50 is indeed a premium product, and it will be priced based on its price. It has a more powerful 177 PS engine. Compared with the more "utilitarian" Daihatsu Rocky / Toyota Raize, the transparent interior space is more premium and luxurious.

The price difference between Perodua and Proton is not great. Neither of these two national car brands has enough "brand flexibility" to raise their prices. Automakers build cars to meet consumer demand, not because of the uncertainty of the automotive market segment.

Therefore, there is no need to debate in the comparison of car segments, because consumers will make their own comparisons based on the price and how far apart the price of the car they choose is. This is why automakers produce products without considering the subdivision.
