Treating your staff the right way
Before we begin today's article, please make sure you are in the official Mentor Hub Discord Server so you never miss a new article!
Why should we treat our staff correctly? And is it actually important?
Yes, it is important, because as an owner of a community you should always be there for your staff - leading them into the right direction, and making sure they are comfortable and feel welcomed into your servers staff team. They are committing (and volunteering) their own time into keeping your server safe - so why not appreciate the work they are doing.
Here are some simple suggestions on how to treat your staff correctly:
- Doing weekly/or monthly announcements (in the staff announcements channel) telling them (your staff) on how much you appreciate them for what they have done within the last certain timeframe between each announcement.
- This suggestion is only for people willing to spend money: Reward your staff now & again, even if you cannot give them nitro, surprise them with something that they would really appreciate. This is not me saying you should go and spend money on your team, this is me saying that you should give something in return.
- Removing multiple hoisted staff roles (this is also explained in our last article) can really create that tension between the staff & yourself. Having one hoisted role can create that fairness between your staff team and not make one feel like they are useless or "less powerful" than others may be.
- Handing out undeserved promotions & free ranking is one way you are going to annoy someone within your staff team. Giving someone who doesn't deserve a spot on the team a really high rank can deem unfair and may cause arguments between you & your staff. When handing out promotions, not only do you have to be fair, but if someone doesn't fit the requirements for the promotion, you have to state why and put your point across (without being disrespectful or rude about it).
- Always consult your staff about server changes before you add it into the server. Your staff isn't just there to stand as guard within your chats, but they are also there to help make & help suggest changes for the server. You might be owner, but it doesn't always mean you are making the correct choice.
- Letting your team have breaks/rest days is a great way for your staff to not only just have a rest, but reset their minds and let them have a break from the app. No reason should be required when a staff member requests a break, as they may want to keep it confidential. Moving onto rest days.. just pick a time within the month (usually a set date) where the chats are locked and staff don't have to check/or worry about the server during those hours. Everybody is human and cannot work all the time, we all get tired and we all require a reset once in a while.
- Being a rude and disrespectful person overall just creates that bad reputation for yourself and just triggers your staff to either leave or retaliate. Moderators/admins commit their time and want to be respected for what they do. If you want your staff to respect you, respect them back. What goes around, comes around. (totally not a quote from Dhar Man..)
