Translating Abay from Kazakh to English as a linguistic and intellectual exercise

My friend asked me to help him with translation of some pieces of Abay. It almost broke my brain but I enjoyed the process and the product seems to be good. It was a great language exercise to improve both my Kazakh and my English. Of course, there are translations of the major works of Abay in English, but for me they looked unsatisfactory. I tried to come up with a better translation than the existing ones. I gotta give my friend some credit too. On some of them we worked together.

The gist of life is entering the grave

With love of others and a virtuous name,

If words and deeds are left behind,

Even with death you stay alive.

And every good thing has a measure, when it exceeds the measure, it becomes useless. Knowing the measure is a great and necessary skill.

If you wish to be among mindful people, examine yourself once a day, or if not then once a week, or at least once a month! Since the last time you examined yourself, how did you spend your life, have you spent it in a way that benefitted your knowledge, your afterlife or this life? Did you spend it in a way that will not bring regret in the future? Or perhaps you yourself do not even remember how you have lived?

There is no room for humanity if one has not known all the seen and unseen aspects of the world at least with physical senses of the body. Since there is no knowledge of it, the soul of the one is not a human soul, but an animal soul.

There are three things that can cause disgrace to the whole of humankind, things you ought to avoid: first of them is ignorance, second is sloth, third is wickedness. Ignorance is the lack of knowledge, in the absence of which nothing can be achieved; lack of knowledge is beastly. Sloth is the enemy of all the arts in the world; mediocrity, lack of willpower, shamelessness and poverty — all are products of laziness. Wickedness is the enemy of humankind: when one becomes an enemy of humankind, one alienates oneself from people and joins the pool of predators.The cure to these is the love for people, the desire for general well-being, firmness of spirit, justice and the knowledge that makes one see the causes and consequences of one’s actions.

Reading the English translations reminded me of how we read sayings of Confucius, Mencius, Mozi and other Chinese philosophers in the course called Ways of Chinese Wisdom during my summer school at university. It also looked very odd in English, but it was full of Eastern character, language and wisdom.
