The small village of Hovhannavan, located in Armenia, has made an amazing archaeological discovery that has attracted the attention of historians, archaeologists and locals alike. Recently, a report has appeared detailing the discovery of a medieval tomb carved in the rock. This discovery, hidden underground for centuries, has only just begun to be studied, but the story of its discovery is already intriguing.
Marat Hayrapetyan, the owner of the territory where the tomb was found, has been diligently excavating in the Kasakh Gorge for more than 14 years. This amazing zeal is inspired by a vivid dream he had many years ago. Marat claims that in the dream the Lord led him to this very spot, ordering him to dig.
Armed only with determination and the support of his family, the man, along with neighbors, friends, and his sons, tirelessly excavated the rocky terrain. They were not deterred by the difficult stony ground of the gorge, and when they came across clay vessels and various artifacts that hinted at the existence of something important buried beneath the surface, they continued their excavations with renewed vigor. It was only after 14 years of hard labor that they stumbled upon something interesting. It was the entrance to a mysterious structure. On the stone blocks near the entrance they saw crosses that hinted at the religious purpose of their discovery.
The man informed the authorities about his discovery. Representatives of the “Service for the Protection of Historical Environment and Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserves” promptly responded to the message and arrived at the excavation site. They documented all the findings and initiated measures to ensure the preservation of this newfound cultural heritage site.
Head of the Department of Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments Harutyun Vanyan emphasized the importance of the discovery. Despite the presence of interesting historical sites in the vicinity, including ancient settlements and fortresses, the existence of this underground complex remained unknown until now.
A subsequent visit by representatives of the Ministry to the excavation site emphasized the importance of preserving this newly discovered monument. An agreement was reached with Marat Hayrapetyan on the transfer of archaeological materials for restoration and security measures to protect the site from potential damage or looting.
As excitement builds in Hovhannavan village, experts expect excavations to begin, scheduled for February 19. The complex nature of the tomb, combined with the presence of two burials, has led scholars to speculate about its age and significance. While some experts believe the structure dates back to the V-VII centuries, based on the appearance of the crosses, others lean toward the XII-XIII centuries.
Despite differing opinions, one thing remains certain - the tomb buries the remains of important personalities. Although the excavation site is currently cordoned off due to the risk of rockfall, the people of Oganawan hope that their village will become a new tourist attraction.
