New Plans for Reducing Methane Emissions Announced in the “Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy”
Declaring this year as the “Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy” in our country marks a key initiative to take significant steps toward ensuring ecological stability. As known, JSC "Uzbekneftegaz" is implementing the "Methane Emission Reduction" project in partnership with the international company Vema S.A.
Today, a meeting with representatives of the company was held, where the positive results achieved within the project and the prospects for further expanding cooperation were discussed.
As part of this project, methane emissions at the company’s production facilities were reduced by 16 million cubic meters, equivalent to 297 thousand tons of CO₂. This achievement represents a major step for the country in combating climate change and makes a significant contribution to supporting global climate efforts.
It is worth noting that during the 26th COP summit focused on methane emission reduction, the Global Methane Pledge initiative was adopted, and in 2022, our country joined this initiative. This demonstrates Uzbekistan’s commitment to actively participate in global climate change mitigation efforts. Projects aimed at reducing methane emissions will also contribute to fulfilling the country’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.
The project not only benefits the environment but also strengthens the economy through energy savings and the introduction of new technologies in production.
Note: Vema S.A. has over 25 years of experience in implementing advanced technologies and methods in similar projects. Following the meeting, new strategic steps were identified for further implementation within the project.
