The Ascento Robot.

The Ascento Pro is fully autonomous – although it can still also be remotely controlled.

It was just last year that we heard about the Ascento, a self-balancing, two-legged, wheeled, hopping robot. Its designers have now unveiled the even more capable Ascento Pro.

The Ascento Pro robot was created by a team of engineering students at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich (ETH Zürich). It features two bendable legs, each one with a hub-motorized wheel on the bottom.

For moving along flat surfaces such as floors or roads, it quickly and efficiently rolls along on those wheels.

When it encounters an obstacle, though, it stops and crouches down to preload its spring-equipped legs, then jumps up and forward to hop over the object. By performing this action repeatedly, the robot is even capable of climbing stairs.

Jumping repeatedly even allows the robot to steadily climb its way up flights of stairs.

The Ascento Pro's versatility allows it to pick itself up from a variety of positions in the event that it should either fall or be pushed over.

The robot can also 'sit down' gently to conserve power while it awaits further instructions from its operators. This robot can reportedly run for a whopping eight hours. Its top speed is 12 km/h.

The Ascento robot can move anywhere a human can, even over uneven terrain and obstacles. The robot's capabilities can be used for security services to guard large properties at any time of day and in all weather conditions, using 360-degree and thermal security cameras.
