The Fly Farming.
Bioflytech has launched the production of flours and fats derived from dried black soldier fly larvae. This development follows the company’s achievement as the first Spanish entity in the industry to secure the authorization for producing, processing and marketing such products.
Larvae feed on low added value organic by-products and Bioflytech obtains from the larvae biomass a high quality protein and rich functional fats.
This Spanish company has started producing insect meal for use in aquafeed and pet food after obtaining authorisation for the process.
Bioflytech sites include larvae production units, a processing facility, and a storage facility for frass (larvae excreta) which is used as a fertiliser. Estimated production capacity equals 12000 tonnes of BSF larvae (BSF = The Black Soldier Fly) per year and an expansion is planned to increase capacity to 100000 tonnes.
There are 4 main products made out from BSF (BSF = The Black Soldier Fly):
- dried larvae, which have highly digestible protein and all the necessary components for the diet of poultry, fish and other animals; - fats, which are obtained from the larvae without using chemicals; - high protein meals (flours); - a compost (frass).
Looking ahead, Bioflytech is aiming to initiate the fresh larvae fattening process targeting an annual production of 12000 tons. The company also plans for an expansion, with ambitions to scale up fresh larvae production to 100000 tons annually.
