Interest in this revolutionary "car of the future" was high, and DeLorean had some high-powered advertising partners on its side.

In late 1980, American Express released a Christmas catalog wherein the lucky consumer had the rare opportunity to buy one of a very limited number of gold-plated DeLoreans. The slogan of the ad read: "This Christmas American Express brings you the gold at the end of the rainbow."

American Express advertised 24-karat gold DeLorean was engineered by Colin Chapman, famous for his time at Lotus, and designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, a world-renowned automotive designer.

The entire stainless steel outer body panels of this limited edition DeLorean were electroplated with pure 24-karat gold.

The car was powered by V6 2.85L engine, paired with 5-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission. Iconic gull-wing doors moved with an assistance of the torsion bars.

24-karat gold DeLorean reached 100km/h mark under 8 seconds. The production took place in the United Kingdom in 1980 with the delivery to the United States in 1981.

US$85000 was the total price of this unique vehicle, which must be paid from the American Express Card only. US$85000 sum would equate to more than US$250000 in today's money. DeLorean never got around of building 100 of these things!

DeLorean DMC-12 from the Peterson Automotive Museum. This car was driven in Back to the Future (1985), Back to the Future II (1989), and Back to the Future III (1990).

Just 4 cars were ultimately sold, with one eventually making an appearance at the Petersen Automotive Museum in California today.
