Cleft Sentences

Cleft sentences are used to help us focus on a particular part of the sentence and to emphasise what we want to say by introducing it or building up to it with a kind of relative clause. Because there are two parts to the sentence it is called cleft (from the verb cleave) which means divided into two.

It-cleft sentences

Предложения с it – это самый распространенный вид расщепленных предложений. Информация, которая следует за it, является наиболее важной. Предложение, которое следует за предложением it, присоединяется с помощью that и содержит информацию, которая уже известна. Часто that опускается в разговорной речи.

Wh-cleft sentences

Чаще всего этот вид предложений содержит связку what, но можно использовать и why, where, how и т.д. Структура таких предложения аналогичная: после wh-слова идет старая информация, а во втором предложении после wh-слова сообщается что-то новое.
