Lesson 28. What If?..

Choose an appropriate present for the following people:

• Julia, your mother. She doesn’t need another scarf or a bottle of perfume.
• John, your father. Hard to say whether he has any hobbies.
• Mitch, your brother. He travels for work a lot.
• Sara, your sister-in-law. She is a stay-at-home mother and already has plenty of cooking gadgets.
• Tim and Tom, your twin nephews. They literally owe every latest toy and computer game on the market.
• Martha, your grandmother. Last year you got her a sweater and you never saw her wear it.
• Joe, your unmarried uncle. He reads a lot but claims he doesn’t have space for any more books at home.

Все условные предложения:

1. как правило, являются сложными (содержат в себе две грамматические основы);
2. содержат в себе некое условие (при этом часто используется союз if – если);
3. могут быть реальными или нереальными (напр.если бы была жизнь на Марсе);
4. могут относиться к настоящему, прошлому или будущему.

4 types of Conditionals

(1) – «нулевое условие» или Zero conditional (реальное условие, относящееся к настоящему),

Если погода хорошая, я иду гулять.

(2) – «первое условие» или First Conditional (реальное условие, относящееся к будущему),

Если погода будет хорошая, я пойду гулять (предложение относится к настоящему или будущему).

(3) – «второе условие» или Second Conditional (маловероятное условие, относящееся к настоящему или будущему),

Если бы (сегодня, завтра) погода была хорошая, я бы пошел гулять (предложение относится к настоящему или будущему времени).

(4) – «третье условие» или Third Conditional (нереальное условие, относящееся к прошлому).

Если бы (вчера) погода была хорошая, я бы пошел гулять (предложение относится к прошлому).

Conditional Type 1

Examples:

• If he tries hard, he will succeed. Если он будет стараться, он добьется успеха.
• If they study hard, they will pass an exam. Если они будут много заниматься, они сдадут экзамен.
• If she feels well, she will come. Если она будет чувствовать себя хорошо, она придет.

Examples:

• She will call me if she goes to the cinema. Она позвонит мне, если пойдет в кино.
• He will come if you call him. Он придет, если ты позвонишь ему.
• They will help her if she asks them. Они помогут ей, если она попросит.

Markers:

IF - если

WHEN - когда

UNLESS - до тех пор, пока

PROVIDED(THAT) - при условии, что

PROVIDING - при уловии

AS LONG AS - до тех пор
