Writix.co.uk | What are the steps and the form of a personal statement?
Follow any sort of guide-structure you find online, or even right here in the answers to your question, and add to it several things:
- Go through a significant drafting/redrafting process. I encourage people I consult to go through 10-20 redrafts if they feel their personal statement really will make a difference.
- Ask friends, family and teachers to proof-read it while you're redrafting. Ask them to point out errors in language or grammar and to tell you how it sounds to them should they be in an admission committee or working for a recruiting company/recruiting department at a company.
- Your SOP only matters if it's not trivial/cliche. There's in fact 3 types of SOP:
- the one that hurts your application due to poor English, grammar mistakes, writing things that are silly/inane/detrimental to your application;
- the one that is bland/trivial/cliche - "I have always dreamed of becoming a doctor"
- the one that actually adds value to your application, as it offers both insight into your decisions and accomplishments, and a congruent, personal feel that might even make you memorable and "tangible" to the reader.
- Make sure your statement is something that feels sincere. Best way to do it is to find a way in which you sell yourself as best as possible while still being sincere.
- Always focus on how you come across as a person. This is particularly important.
- If you have a chance to know what your teacher recommendations say about you, make sure you in some measure confirm these recommendations by pointing out similar things in your statements, as well as some things that perhaps your recommendations have neglected.
- Your SOP is your only chance of making a difference in your application. Everything else you've already finalist. Your studies, your GPA, your extracurricular, your test scores...it's all concluded. So treat it as such.
- Make sure you're making it rather clear why you're applying to a specific program, what contributions you feel you can make, how that particular program is logically and predictably responsible for what you want to do with your life upon graduation.
