Anniversary of the Black Cat, White Cat

On June 1, 1998, the premiere of the film "Crna mačka, beli mačor (Black Cat, White Cat)" took place in Yugoslavia. Director Emir Kusturica.

In September 1998, this film participated in the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for the main prize - the Golden Lion. However, as Sergey Kudryavtsev noted in his review, "because of the intrigues of the Italians, led by the chairman of the jury, the famous director Ettore Skola, it was circumvented by the main prize". Jury decided to give the main prize to a rather mediocre, but Italian, film - “Così ridevano (The Way We Laughed)”.

According to another Russian film critic, Andrei Plakhov, the public disapproved of this decision. According to him, “it was after the film of Kusturitsa that the applause did not calm down for a long time, they preceded the start of the director’s press conference, demonstrating the rare and therefore especially touching unity of the professional press and the audience.”

But Emir Kusturica was not left without an award - he was awarded the Silver Lion for directing.

According to the Rottentomatoes website, the vast majority of reviews by professional film critics contain enthusiastic characteristics and epithets, for example: “It's a mad scramble through the Felliniesque realm of Kusturica's imagination”, or “rude, crazy comedy, an ode to love, freedom and friendship” or “manic, carnival, considering death as an insignificant (and temporary) inconvenience ", or" A colorful, frenetic mixture of slapstick and folklore that stands a good chance of delighting arthouse audiences the world over.»

Simple moviegoers accepted this film with no less, if not more, enthusiasm. 74% of IMDB and Kinopoisk users gave this film a rating of 8 to 10.

Based on the above, according to FilmGourmand’s version, the film has a rating of 8.729 and takes 234th place in the Golden Thousand.
